PASTOR’S PEN . . .

Signs of growth in a summer’s season?
Trend watchers abound in today’s world. Data seems to be arrangeable to
support any conclusion one desires. So, it may be that what we see here at
Whidbey Presbyterian Church is limited by conscious or unconscious selection,
but consider these signs:
1. Worship attendance is ‘sagging’ a bit as summer travel kicks in.
This is normal. At the same time, the re-instituted 8:30 a.m. breakfast
service of worship on Sundays started off with numbers matching most any Sunday
of the year. And that’s not to mention the great sense of community and
energy and worship of God in the service. Great food, too!
2. At least ten of the Life Groups (new name for small groups such as
those begun during the 40 Days of Purpose) are continuing to meet through the
summer for fellowship and study. New folks coming on are invited to
contact Kurt Imbach through the church office and connect with or form a new
group right away. No sense waiting until September for this vital and
life-giving ministry!
3. Financial giving is running a little ahead of budgeted expectations.
Compare this to a year ago when we were several percentage points behind.
All this is while we complete the new kitchen and are ahead of projected income
against expense there as well. Could this speak of a growing sense of
commitment and enthusiasm for our life and ministry together?
4. Vacation Bible School just completed had somewhat fewer children than
before, but a plethora of pre-schoolers. The next generation is here and
looking to learn about Jesus! Many thanks, also, to the great crew of
dedicated folks who made up the strong team of leaders and workers that led us
on the “Serengeti Trek.”
5. Our expanded staff is working well and already laying plans to further
develop the principles of the Purpose Driven ministry in ways that will deepen
our spiritual growth and reach out to invite others to follow our Lord, too.
We’re looking forward to exciting and fruitful discussion and planning with the
Session and Deacons in August.
Some people may look at these things and claim nothing more than data
selection. I look at them and see God at work in His church. How
about you? Where are you going to be growing this summer?
