THE LOG                                                                                                                           August 2005
Pastor Dave was on vacation during the month of July.  He chose this cartoon for your amusement in lieu of his usual column.

It has been a privilege to be able to fill in for Rev. Dave through the month of July.  You all have been very supportive, encouraging, and cooperative.  It is clearly apparent that our church functions as a result of many dedicated, Christ like, hardworking, competent people working as a team.  It is a pleasure to be a part of that.  (continued)
Youth News From Justin.  We have just had four of our high school students complete Youth in Leadership Training at Tall Timber Ranch.  Tall Timber has high school students from all over the state apply to attend this each summer, and it is amazing that we had four students from our congregation accepted this year.  (continued)

Stephen Ministers: The After People.  Frequently friends will ask, “I know you’re involved in Stephen Ministry.  Can you tell me exactly what a Stephen Minister is?”  I like to explain that Stephen Ministers are “After People.”

Stephen Ministers are there:

...after you’ve washed and returned the last casserole dish.   (continued)

Presbyterian Women.
Boutique workshops will be held on August 11 and August 25, starting at 10:00 A.M.  Meet us in Heritage Hall with a sack lunch and your energy and enthusiasm.  No other skills required!  The workers have been wonderful!  The rest of August is for planning and enjoying!

The Evening Women's Bible Study will resume on September 14th, at 7:00 P.M., in the Blue House, every second Wednesday.  This year’s study is a study of the Liturgical Calendar, called FOR EVERYTHING, A SEASON.   Books are on order and more information to come.  Contact Margie W.

Adult Sunday School Class meeting in the Blue House during the early service will be using WE BELIEVE curriculum for Fall 2005.  Our study books will be our own Bibles.  We will have guidelines as to what scriptures to read for each Sunday.

our gorl for the fall quarter is to discover a variety of images of God and to ascertain the way in which God remained faithful to the covenant peoples in the Hebrew Scriptures or the Old Testament.

Our first four weeks search will begin in Psalms.  Please come join us beginning September 11th.

Church Library.  Librarians Becky B. and Nancy H. are working diligently to create a catalog of the library’s holdings.  Along the way they are also adding new material both purchased and donated to the library.  Among new adult titles are The Hornet’s Nest, by Jimmy Carter, and a biography of Rick Warren, A Life With Purpose, by George Mair.  New Young Adult titles include a series of Jenny McGrady mysteries, by Patricia Rushford of Vancouver, Washington.  In the children’s collection we have new biographies of Marian Anderson and Muhammad, as well as a set of Bible stories, covering the Old and New Testaments in five volumes.  Come in and see what’s new.

Budget Requests. It’s that time of year again when thoughts must turn to budgets.  All Session teams and other Church groups who work from a church budget are asked to have your 2006 budget requests to the Stewardship Team by August 16, 2005.  Please submit your written request to Jim P.

They may be turned in to the church office, placed in my mail box, or emailed to jppeter@whidbey.net.

Men’s Fellowship has had a busy month of July. In the absence of Pastor Dave we have taken a recess from our usual productive studies in the Gospel of Matthew, and have used the time to explore ways of taking on more of an active, servant role in the life of our church.  Our attendance has remained strong through the summer and we are excited about some directions the Holy Spirit seems to be moving us.  Be aware that these things all have to be fine-tuned and prioritized, but we are talking about “fix-it” kinds of projects for the benefit of widows, widowers, and the aging.  We need to find ways of discovering needs, setting parameters, and assigning tasks, but the groundwork is being laid.  We are also very grateful for the young people with which God has blessed our church and we want to find ways to reach out to them, get to know them better and create ways to build bridges across generations.  The Lord is strongly prompting us to be more than hearers and learners, but also doers and servers.

New Fire Alarm System Installed.  Though nothing is ever really perfect, we are as close to fireproof as almost $3,000 will get us.  A new fire alarm system has been installed by Whidbey Telecom Security & Alarms.  The new system is a complete replacement of the old system and incorporates the new kitchen.  Any alarm not only goes directly to the Fire Department but it will tell the Fire Department where the fire is on church property.  At the time of installation, the system complied with all current building and fire regulations.

Missionary Support and "Praying the Psalms."  We meet the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, starting in September.  Bring a sack lunch and join us at noon.  Everyone is welcome.

Some of the missionaries we support are:  The Burke family, Chad Central Africa; The Raney family, Indonesia; Daystar University and Dr. Marta Bennett, Kenya; Don Mowat, World Concern and others.  We will also be a support group for people from WPC on short term mission.

“Praying With the Psalms” by Eugene Peterson will help us pray for the world and for the Lord’s servants.
